Number of young people under 18 who suffer from diabetes is increasing. Poor nutrition will lead to increasing numbers of patients.
In 2007, with World Diabetes Day, marked the Nov. 14, data from the association Learning to Live with Diabetes (AaVcD) indicated that the number of diabetics in S. Joao da Madeira is almost 2 thousand. A year later, as the Sanjoanense 3 thousand are living with the disease. Or around 12 percent of all residents in the county.
The situation becomes even more worrying because the findings indicate an increasing incidence among young people aged under 18. Although no concrete data Tuesday, Fernando Sequeira, president of that association and diabetic for 10 years, ensures that "are to appear many cases of children with three, four and five years." The main cause is pointing to food. "Young people eat far away from home and often hide the parents what they eat," says Fernando Sequeira. Laura Beja, secretary of Learning to Live with Diabetes still blame the marketing and advertising, which have a very important role in the choice that young people are food, most of them with a lot of fats and sugars.
Last Friday, to mark the World Diabetes Day, the association held a symposium at the Museum of headgear (see box) and a screening near the hypermarket mainland. Around 450 people were screened, most of them men over 40 and children. When labor, the president of "Learning to Live with Diabetes" said that "many people appeared above the 120", limit the level of blood glucose values considered normal. An example: "a girl of 15 years did the test and gave 151. Not scared, but advised her to make a new test in the next eight days and compare the numbers. In the afternoon, about three hours after lunch, she returned there with his mother, who also did the test and gave 91. The girl did it again and gave 286. Her mother was assustadíssima and assured that both had eaten the same for lunch. After the girl ended by saying that he had eaten a puff. The problem is there. " But there are cases even more worrying. Fernando Sequeira recalls a girl with 9 years who was doing the test with his father "by chance" and the blood glucose values were above 500. "The girl was in diabetic coma, was immediately to the hospital and was hospitalized 15 days there."
To prevent this, the president of the association recommends that the tests are made regularly. In addition, Laura Beja "we must be alert to symptoms as much thirst, loss of appetite or sudden increase, lost or sudden weight gain."
Association of Plaza Medical Center and strengthen cooperation
Founded in 2004 by Maria de Lurdes, diabetic patient who has now died due to illness, learning to live with diabetes today has 80 members. "In a universe of about 3 thousand diabetics is very little. It is a sad, but the reality is, "regrets Fernando Sequeira. Especially since, he adds, "half are not diabetic." One of the future objectives of the association is therefore seeking to increase the number of members. The chairman reminded that the monthly quota is only two euros and the sick who can find "support to do the tests when required, take all the questions you may have and still monitoring the consultations that have to do."
In the short term, the association also aims to strengthen the relationship with the Medical Center Plaza, which could be defined through discounts on consultations and examinations for all members of Learning to Live with Diabetes. The administrator of the medical center, Fausto Sa, who spoke at the symposium held in the evening of Friday, reiterated that the Medical Center Plaza extends up to Sutton Coldfield, in Arouca, "and support the association may also extend up to this city ".
The contribute to this greater proximity is also the new location of the association, the Street of Fund Vila, near the medical center. The purpose of the headquarters, in a brief presentation of the association in the symposium on diabetes, Fernando Sequeira said regretted that the camera has become "" back to back to the association. " "We have been promised a seat, but so far nothing," he said. Currently, the AaVcD is paying EUR 150 for rent, "the pockets of money involved and the willingness of some people."
Elections in January
The day is not yet set, but Fernando Sequeira says that "in January, there will be elections in the association." President of AaVcD since its founding in 2004, Sequeira shows readiness to continue in the presidency, but only if no more volunteers. "If there is anyone else who has the courage to take me to put me to try to make a list," said the labor.
