Today is day of smoking

It is the leading cause of preventable diseases in the world and kills on average more than 12 thousand Portuguese per year. Therefore, this Monday, tobacco was the main target of several initiatives of the National Day of Non Smokers.

"The important thing today is getting the message under doctor for the social sector. The not smoke no longer solves nothing, because everyone will know that smoking is bad. Now we want to warn the obligations of each, so the father says his son not to smoke, so that the coach say the same to his athlete ...», explained Ferreira Reis, pulmonologist and collaborator of the Portuguese Cardiology Foundation, the PortugalDiário.

Pointing out that "seven out of ten people start to smoke at home because there already a smoker, the doctor suggested using" positive references to society "and continue to speak of the dangers of smoking.

ASAE ten hundred open cases for violation of the Tobacco Law

In the Park of Nations, the Portuguese Cardiology Foundation hosted a screening to measure the quantity of carbon monoxide in the blood, so simple that "enough blow in a barrel" as the blood alcohol tests.

"The smoke is carbon monoxide that blocks some blood cells and blood oxygen does not leave the ring. You can go to six or seven percent in those who smoke a lot and is indicative of an cansaço that tobacco causes, warned Ferreira Reis.

Other components of cigarette contribute to that, for example, a smoker has a probability of having a cancer of the lung 23 times higher than that of a non-smoker.

The passive smoking and the impact of new law

The new Tobacco Act, which came into force on January 1, 2008, attempted to increase prevention. Ten months later, what has changed after all?

"As we enter the buildings feel a much more breathable air. And, for example, in restaurants, we can better enjoy the food and drink, we have the most refined senses', defended Manuel Rite, clinical director of the House of Assembly of Guimaraes, the PortugalDiário.

In 2007, a study of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology, showed that one in five deaths due to tobacco smoking was passive: "The tobacco can bring pleasure and relaxation to smokers, but not only brings harm to them, but also who is to his back. We want to warn, for example, who smokes and leads with their children inside the car, or to the harm of smoking to our best friends, animals ".

"The most important to stop smoking is to have desire '

The House of Health in Guimaraes, who organized a seminar, this Monday, for an assessment of the effects of the new law, is a recent anti-smoking multidisciplinary consultation with pulmonologists, psychologists and nutritionists to: "The most important thing is to stop smoking be aware, be willing to do so. Without that, nothing done. "

During the seminar "More and Better Living - Impact of New Law on Smoking ', were several distinguished personalities, as an example to society for their contribution against tobacco. Rosa Mota, Manuel Cajuda, Professor Pinto da Costa and Joao Pedro Pais were some of the contemplated.
